Pasti operating sistem ini sudah tidak asing lagi ditelinga para pengguna komputer, Ubuntu merupakan salah satu distribusi Linux yang berbasiskan Debian. Proyek Ubuntu resmi disponsori oleh Canonical Ltd yang merupakan perusahaan milik seorang kosmonot asal Afrika Selatan Mark Shuttleworth. Nama Ubuntu diambil dari nama sebuah konsep ideologi di Afrika Selatan, "Ubuntu" berasal dari bahasa kuno Afrika, yang berarti "rasa perikemanusian terhadap sesama manusia". Tujuan dari distribusi Linux Ubuntu adalah membawa semangat yang terkandung di dalam Filosofi Ubuntu ke dalam dunia perangkat lunak. Ubuntu adalah sistem operasi lengkap berbasis Linux, tersedia secara bebas dan mempunyai dukungan baik yang berasal dari komunitas maupun tenaga ahli profesional.

Langsung ke judul, hari ini Ubuntu versi 10.04 LTS resmi direalease versi fullnya. Versi LTS adalah Long Term Support jadi berbeda dengan yang versi 6 bulan sekali, untuk lts lumayan lama support jadi ngga usah khawatir jika ada veris baru mesti update-update lagi. versi LTS terakhir di realease saat saya masih mengerjakan Tugas Akhir pada 21 April 2008 pada versi 8.04 (codename : Hardy Heron). Versi 10.04 menggunakan codename : Lucid Lynx - si kucing hutan. Kenapa menggunakan nama itu menurut saya karena kucing hutan lebih lincah, peka, buas dan kuat bertahan di alam liar dibanding mesti menggunakan kucing rumah hehehe. Dan bisa juga mengikuti jejak Mac OS bersaudara yang menggunakan nama-nama keluarga meong dan dilihat dari interface Ubuntu yang sekarang lebih clear dan simple seperti Mac OS.
